The history and impacts of youngster sexual maltreatment Youngster sexual maltreatment is unquestionably not another or present day marvel and despite the fact that it was not really recognized before the 1800s, it doesn't imply that it didn't exist. From the beginning of time, documentation about youngster sexual maltreatment has existed, with references particularly to Greek and Roman civilisations, just as in provincial America and Europe (Bolen, 2002). Jean-Claude Chenais (1981), in an investigation utilizing numerous information sources has been essential in the mentality changes in Western social orders over the issue of kid sexual maltreatment in the course of the most recent hundred years. His examinations have indicated that because of various distinctive contributing elements, in some European nations like Germany and France, kid sexual maltreatment was so visit as to be viewed as ordinary (Bagley King, 2004). As refered to in Bolen (2002), in his exploration on old style youth investigation of various authentic periods, DeMause (1988), states that: The historical backdrop of youth is a bad dream from which we have just started to stir. The further back in history one goes, the lower the degree of youngster care, and the almost certain kids are to be executed, surrendered, beaten, threatened and explicitly mishandled. In her examination of verifiable kid sexual maltreatment, Florence Rush has discovered that it is prevalently a marvel of the male centric frameworks ever, where youngsters were considered as property of the dad. In Talmudic law the custom a female girl can be promised by her dad by methods for sex after the age of three. Despite the fact that not supported, sexual acts incorporating intercourse with a youngster more youthful than three years isn't a wrongdoing. Such sexual action with little youngsters was not disheartened by the Catholic Church either ever, as in a Papal pronouncement of the 6th century expressed that for a union with be substantial it was having sex that was the abrogating variable and assent just attractive. The age of the young lady was mulled over with the end goal of assurance to be wedded where if the young lady was not at any rate seven years of age than this was viewed as invalid. Likewise, through history we find anyway that sexual maltreatment was not con strained distinctly to young ladies. Particularly in Greece, it was well known to utilize young men for sex. It was likewise regular to maim little youngsters and purchase or sell them as sex slaves (Bagley King, 2004). In its expansive sense, kid sexual maltreatment is the point at which a more established individual persuasively takes part in sexual action with a kid. The meaning of the terms rape on kids or youngster attack is distinctive in various legitimate wards (Rowan, 2006). As refered to in Kinnear (2007), kid sexual maltreatment is characterized by Fraser (1981) similar to the misuse of a kid for the sexual satisfaction of a grown-up, while Baker and Duncan (1985) guarantee that [a] kid (anybody under 16 years) is explicitly manhandled when someone else, who is explicitly adult, includes the kid in any movement which the other individual hopes to prompt their sexual excitement. In their 2003 report on the abuse of kids, the Childrens Bureau of the US Department of Health and Human Services characterizes it as the association of the youngster in sexual action to give sexual satisfaction or money related advantage to the culprit, including contacts for sexual reason, attack, legally defined sexual assault, prostitution, sex entertainment, presentation, inbreeding, or other explicitly misuse exercises (U.S. Division for Health and Human Services, Administration for Children, Youth and Families, 2005). The time of assent is likewise not the same as one nation to another. In any case, it is regularly comprehended, that a youngster can't comprehend or readily agree to sexual encounters with a more seasoned individual. It is likewise recognized that there exists sexual experimentation between youngsters and along these lines attack charges are possibly implemented when the more established individual is sixteen or eighteen and that kid is three or five years more youthful (Rowan, 2006). There are sure factors which classify sexual experiences as maltreatment as per the World Health Organization. Just as the age distinction it additionally remembers for the definition the abuse of a place of power by the grown-up which at that point prompts sexual acts. The kid should likewise be reluctant to take an interest in such acts regardless of whether the person didn't offer obstruction. It additionally requires the endeavor to contact the privates or bosoms of a youngster or make the kid contact the ones of the grown-up. In the event that the grown-up endeavors to contact the youngster by uncovering himself or if the kid is stripped, made to, just as the endeavor to lure or entice to assume to another position while brain science compromising the kid (Fegert, 2003). Sociological meanings of youngster sexual maltreatment vary from the clinical or lawful ones and while some are generally recognized some are less so despite the fact that similarly significant and persuasive (L awrence, 2004). One of the definitions generally acknowledged by kid assurance administrations is that of Schechter and Roberge and it expresses that Sexual maltreatment is characterized as the inclusion of ward, formatively youthful youngsters and teenagers in sexual exercises they don't genuinely appreciate, to which they can't give educated assent (Schechter Roberge, 1976). While inquiring about youngster sexual maltreatment, it isn't unexpected to connect this with the phenomology of pedophilia. While evaluating and treating sex wrongdoers in any case, experts realize that it is imperative to investigate various factors that have a significant job in such freak sexual conduct. The sexual inclination and history, including any of wrongdoing or savagery, are thought about. Some other issue, for example, endocrine or neuropsychological ones just as some other organic variables are to be investigated (Langevin, 2003). By definition, a pedophile is commonly a person who for no not exactly a time of a half year fantasizes about having sexual experiences with small kids or is explicitly stirred by the contemplations of such dreams. Generally the sexual inclinations of such people are centered around youngsters more youthful than thirteen years old. Pedophiles can be baffled from these inclinations and regularly experience the ill effects of relational trouble s on account of these sexual driving forces. In any case, regardless of whether not really consistently the case, a few pedophiles will follow up on such dreams and are generally just captured or brought to consideration along these lines. Most pedophiles are generally not really upset enough about such dreams about kids and as an outcome don't look for willful clinical assistance (Hall, 2007). The key factor in the evaluation of pedophilia is the age of the kids for whom intrigue is appeared. In its most solid structures, selectiveness is appeared towards prepubescent youngsters with no sexual inclinations or enthusiasm for different grown-ups. Not all pedophiles anyway submit sexual offenses with kid casualties and not all sex guilty parties with kids are pedophiles (Seto, 2004). Dr Langevin (2003) noted in any case, that despite the fact that there appear to be various components that are normal between pedophile ministers and different pedophiles regarding sexual inclinations, p edophile clerics by and large have less withdrawn conduct attributes. Considering the enormous measure of media inclusion of the ministry misuse emergency over the most recent couple of years, it appears that despite the fact that much enthusiasm by the network has been started on the subject, little research has been done by mental and clinical bodies. This might be because of a long existing common lack of concern between the Church and the emotional wellness field. Just a couple of studies have really tended to the issue of the pedophile cleric or the minister who explicitly manhandles kids. Regardless of the overcoming media inclusion and consideration of the issue giving a disturbing open supposition that most clerics are pedophiles, an American investigation assessed anyway that lone 2% of ministers are pedophiles while another 4% being ephebophiles. Nonetheless, it is additionally considered that a most likely enormous number of sexual maltreatment cases by the ministry are not announced (Plante, 1999). Michael Rezendes (2002), some portion of t he Boston Globes Spotlight Team was one of the primary writers who pointed out the issue of kid sexual maltreatment charges against the American pastorate. A time of examinations did by this group brought about the acquiescence of Cardinal Bernard Law on the thirteenth December, 2002. This was principally because of the presentation of a progression of weaknesses and slip-ups, in his treatment of a notable pedophoile in Boston; Rev John J. Geoghan, where in the wake of being accounted for of sexual wrongdoing with youngsters, he was reassigned. In any case, unmistakably Geoghn was just an indication of an increasingly major issue. The Spotlight Team researched further into the Archdiocese of Boston and when of Laws renunciation, had distributed more than 800 stories. A prior solitary case which additionally got overall exposure anyway goes back to 1984, where Fr Gilbert Gauthe of Lafayette, Louisiana was charged on different checks of kid sexual maltreatment. This was the main criminal instance of its sort to get such degree of media consideration and exposure and furthermore was the first occasion when that a common suit was started against a bishopric on the grounds of inability to shield kids from a known abuser in its ministry (Murphy, Buckley Joyce, 2005). Dr Richard Sipe, a psychotherapist and specialist just as a previous Roman Catholic Priest, composed widely regarding the matter of youngster sexual maltreatment and reports that even as ahead of schedule as 1976, preceding the enormous outrages broke out on the media, there opened a program, the first, maybe, on the planet committed to the treatment of psychosexual issue for pastorate. This incorporated the treatment of clutters which included the sexual maltreatment of youngsters. The re quirement for such a program and its arrangement, years before its opening, shows that information on Catholic Clergy who had issues of sexual unfortunate behavior was at that point across the board during the 1960s and 70s (Sipe, 1995). How to Create Cool and Unique Character Names (And Ones to Avoid)

How to Create Cool and Unique Character Names (And Ones to Avoid) Throughout history, naming a child was an act that took on special significance. Whether it is a name that means something important, a name that carries on a family heritage, or a name that is as unique as the baby in their armsâ€"naming has always been an important ritual for parents. In fact, this article in Fatherly.com discusses naming rituals around the world, noting that name choice across cultures is far from arbitrary. For example, consider this Nigerian practice:The ethnic Yoruba, who make up about 21 percent of the population of Nigeria, name their babies based on the circumstances of their birth, of which there are many. Consider Aina â€" a girl born with the umbilical cord around her neck. Or Ajayi â€" a boy born with his head facing downwards. Places also matter, as is the case with Tokunbo â€" a boy or girl born overseas.Fatherly.comOr this practice in India:The influence of the horoscope on Indian culture is tremendous. Here, a child often receives the name of the cons tellation they were born under. In the Northern part of India they will take a name that begins with the first letter of the constellation. In Southern regions a child will take the name of the entire constellation.Fatherly.comIn other countries such as Bali and Ireland, birth order of the child determines his or her given name. Specifically in Ireland, children are named after family members and based on their birth order. The first born boy, for instance, will receive the name of their grandfather on their fathers side. The next brother will get the name of their mothers father. The third brother will get the fathers name, and the fourth will get their eldest uncles name. Its the same order with daughters, but starting with the grandmother on their mothers side.Fatherly.comNow, you might be askingâ€"what do parents naming practices have to do with me naming my characters. Well…a lot, actually. If youre an author, your characters are your babies. Theyre your darlings, your creatio nâ€"and often one that has been born through agony, sweat and tears. But is a name really so important? William Shakespeare wrote:Whats in a name? that which we call a roseBy any other name would smell as sweet.William Shakespeare, Romeo and JulietRomeo asks, Whats in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Photo by Ricky Kharawala on UnsplashIs it true that the names you choose for characters are arbitrary and inconsequential, as Romeo mused?History begs to differ. In fact, theres even a branch of study called onomastics, which is a field that is equal parts linguistics, history, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and philology. One glance at this website reveals the extent to which linguists and historians have studied names, including their meaning, origin, and popularity among groups of people. One article on the site discusses the effect a name can have on a persons behavior. The author, H. Edward Deluzain, writes:The process that gives names t heir influence is the so-called self-fulfilling prophecy. Briefly explained, the self-fulfilling prophecy works this way. A man introduces himself to us as Percy. Immediately, our unconscious mind goes to work dredging up all the images and associations we have with that name. Without realizing it, we develop a mental pictureâ€"a set of expectationsâ€"of what a Percy is like. This mental picture causes changes in our own behavior that are so subtle that we are not aware of them. However, Percy picks up on the messages we are sending by our actions, and he makes unconscious changes in his own way of acting to satisfy what he thinks we expect of him. In other words, we set up a situation which forces Percy to behave the way we think Percys are supposed to behave. From Behindthename.comEven in the literary sense, can you envision the characters of Holden Caulfield, Scout Finch, or even Harry Potter by any other name? If you assume that their chosen character names played a large role in making them memorable characters, its definitely a safe assumption to make. So, now that you understand the enormous significance humans have placed on naming someone, you should recognize the importance of taking your time in determining the names of characters in your story or novel. Youd be surprised at the difference a name can make, so before you decide a name for your character, consider these important steps to take.1. Dont decide at the planning stages of your novelThinking of a character name as you outline your book? Not so fast! The best names likely wont come to you until you have fleshed out the character more and written extensively on him or her. In the same sense that many cultures wait until the circumstances surrounding a babys birthâ€"or even longer, as the baby develops a personalityâ€"you should wait to see what kind of personality your character takes on before you decide on a name for him or her.Thats not to say its impossible to know your characters name righ t from the beginning. However, considering the care that should go in to naming your characters (your babies), deciding on a name right from the beginning could stifle your naming creativity and leave you with a character who is poorly named (and therefore, not memorable). The best way to avoid this is to begin your planning and writing with an initial. As you write more about J. or L., the best name will likely come to you as the story progresses. You could even use a keyword such as protagonist or antagonist as you write, then run a simple Find + Replace function to replace that word with the characters name once youve had some time to find the perfect one.2. Consider the root meaning of the names you chooseAnyone who has ever taken a literature class understands the extent to which readers can dive into symbolism and metaphor as they read a good book or story. In fact, this is what English majors and literature professors do best. In doing so, they love to seek out the root meanin g of names to find even more Easter eggs that the author has left for his or her readers throughout the story.Take, for instance, the heroine of the Hunger Games trilogyâ€"Katniss Everdeen. Do you think Suzanne Collins randomly chose that name? Think again. All it takes is a look at this page to understand how deeply Collins researched to find the perfect name for her memorable heroine. Not only is Katniss (Sagittaria sagittifolia) a plant that is also known as arrowhead, most plants in the species have arrow-shaped leaves. Beyond that, the Latin name of the genus calls to mind Sagittarius, the archer in astrology.Still think Collins arbitrarily chose that name? There are many online resources that allow you to find the perfect name for your character. I dont know how Collins arrived at the information on the Katniss plant, but Id like to think she simply Googled arrows or arrowhead and eventually came upon the name Katniss. Whether this is how she did it or not, its a good method fo r you to use to find a cool, unique, and fitting name for your character. Here are a few other great sites that show name meanings:Nameberry.comNames.orgBabyCenter.comAnother great option is to find a Wikipedia page about a certain topic based on your characters history or abilities, and search throughout it for links and other complementary sources that could lead you to the perfect, unique character name.Considering the root meaning of a name is an important step in naming your characters. Photo by Clint McKoy on Unsplash3. Use anachronistic names carefullyLiterarydevices.com offers the following definition of an anachronism in literature:An anachronism is something or someone that is not in the correct chronological time period. Anachronism examples can be intentional or unintentional, and involves the incorrect temporal placement of any person, event, object, custom, slang word, animal, or belief system which was not present at that time. The most common type of anachronism is to find something placed in an earlier time than it existed, such as having characters in the 18th century driving around in a car. However, it is also possible to find anachronisms in which the thing is placed later in time after it no longer existed, such as finding dinosaurs coexisting with humans in The Flintstones. From literarydevices.orgSome great examples of anachronisms in literature are William Shakespeares mention of a mechanical clock in Julius Caesar and fireworks in Mark Twains novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. Obviously, great authors have used anachronisms in their work. However, I advise against naming characters with names that are anachronistic to the storys setting and time period. While this is certainly not an unbreakable rule, you should at least be careful with choosing names that dont fit well with the setting and time period of your story. For example, a novel set in the 19th century with a character named Courtney doesnt really work and will de stroy your readers suspension of disbelief. Likewise, if your story is about a wealthy, aristocratic family and their children, naming one of the children something highly unusual certainly wouldnt fit logically. It just isnt something that aristocrats have tended to do.One thing I like about this name generator provided by Point Park University is the ability to narrow generated names down by time period. The drop-down menus allow you to choose between ancient, old-fashioned, modern and futuristic, ensuring that the names that are generated are not anachronistic. You can also run a search online for popular names during a certain time period, such as Elizabethan England names. Such a search will offer results of websites or name generators specifically focused on the setting and time period of your story. The search I performed for the above search string returned multiple websites that were specific to the criteria I needed.4. Make sure it sounds good when spoken aloudEven though a novel is generally read, there are several marketing options that would require the book to be spoken aloud. Audiobooks are a big selling point and your book made into a movie is a pretty attractive prospect, especially in terms of the money you could make from it.Beyond audiobooks and movie rights, there are always author readings and discussions that will inevitably take place in the process of marketing your book. You will also (hopefully) have a lot of readers discussing your book and its characters in reading circles, or in recommendations to their friends and family, so keep in mind that the character names you choose will be said aloud in certain circumstances and should have a nice ring to it (and not be misheard as something else, unless its intentional).Consider how the character name sounds when spoken aloud.5. Consider character names in the context of other charactersUnless youre writing a short story with one character, your character does not exist in a vacuum. Rathe r, he or she plays off of other characters within the story, and is (in some way) affected by details surrounding those other charactersâ€"including their names. With this in mind, remember that in naming your main characters, there should be a good mix of sounds, initials and number of syllables. In other words, avoid repetitive practices in assigning names to your characters. Giving every character in your book a name that begins with G will get confusing for your readers, just as giving every character a two-syllable name will sound repetitious. Variety is indeed the spice of life, and nowhere is this truer than in assigning character names. The more variety in syllable count and initials you can offer, the easier it will be for your characters to be distinguished from others in the story. This is especially true if you give the important characters unique names, while leaving standard popular names for your secondary characters. The uniqueness will offer an entirely new level of d istinction.6. Use alliterative initialsTheres a reason why characters like Bilbo Baggins and Severus Snape stand out. In fact, J.K. Rowling enjoyed alliteration so much that she used the technique for many names in her books, including the founders of Hogwarts: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.Alliteration puts a unique spin on a characters name, making it more memorable. While some writers (J.K. Rowling, especially) use alliterative first names and surnames often, you can also use the technique to differentiate your protagonist from all the other characters.7. Use name generatorsIf your search for a meaningful name comes up empty, another option is to use a name generator. These are websites and programs that generate various and random names based on criteria you include. For example, The Fantasy Name Generator is a great site for names that would work well in the fantasy genre. This site also has options to generate real names and names of places based on country of origin and gender.A website mentioned earlier that provides the root meanings behind names (Behindthename.com) also offers an option to discover translations and/or alternate versions of certain names across languages. This type of search gives writers the opportunity to find an alternate version of a well-known name that might be more unique. For example, when I ran a search for my first name (Tonya), the following list was generated:AKONI m HawaiianANAKONI m HawaiianANCJO m EsperantoANDON m Bulgarian, MacedonianANDONI m BasqueANTAL m HungarianANTANAS m LithuanianANTE (1) m CroatianANTEA f Croatian (Modern)ANTHONY m EnglishANTÍA f GalicianANTICA f CroatianANTO m Croatian, SerbianANTOINE m French, African AmericanANTOINETTE f FrenchANTÃ"N m GalicianANTON m German, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Dutch, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Slovene, Macedonian, Croatian, Romanian, Estonian, Finnish, EnglishANTONELA f CroatianANTONELLA f ItalianANTONELL O m ItalianANTONETTE f EnglishAnother useful name generator Ive found is Masterpiece Generator, which allows you to fill in specific information and have a name generated based on those details. The specifications and details included along with drop-down menus are:How many examples would you like to generate? (10-100)Which gender would you like?Whats your characters title? What type of character is he/she?Birth year? How would you describe his/her nationality? How would you describe his/her parents nationalities?Which best describes your characters religious background?Alliterative names only? (yes/no)Given Name or Begins with and/or Ends inFamily Name, Popularity, Begins with and/or Ends inYoure also given the option to fill in all of the above with random responses to create a unique, computer-generated name that might be the perfect one. When you generate names on these programs and websites, be sure to generate several to find multiple options youll want to narrow down later.8. Co nsider a name that creates a meaningful anagramFor those lit majors and English professors I mentioned earlier, an anagram is such a fun detail to discover about a characterâ€"especially if that anagram reveals some hidden detail or symbolic reference to the character. Teachers love anagrams in character names because it allows them to offer their students an ah-ha moment when studying the work and while discussing aspects of a character. And have no doubt, English literature students at the university will discuss a characters aspects for hours at a time, seeking meaning in the smallest of details, whether the author intended meaning to be there or not.For example, lets say I wanted to create a character who was a loner but also a stellar physician. In playing with the words lone healer, I came up with the name Lorae Henel. Not only is this a unique nameâ€"its also an anagram of a descriptive phrase representing my character. In simply creating an anagram, Ive achieved two goals in naming the character: 1) Ive created a unique, memorable name; and 2) Ive given my character a name that has hidden meaning (one that is a great Easter egg for a reader to discover).9. Get feedbackOnce youve narrowed down name choices to a list of a few possible names per character, enlist the feedback of a voracious reader that you know and whose opinion you trust. It would be even better to find a reader with a lot of experience reading the genre in which youre writing. Without giving details of your character (such as he is the protagonist, hes a warrior, etc.), write down the name(s) youre deciding between and ask the reader the following questions:How would you pronounce this? When you read this characters name, what kind of person do you envision? Include physical details as well as details about what they might do for a living.Do you think this character is good or bad? Why?Does it remind you of another character name or real-life persons name? After receiving feedback from a reader (or readers), re-evaluate the name in consideration of the readers responses. Just because a reader guesses wrong (for example, thinks a name is for the protagonist vs. an antagonist) doesnt mean you have to change it. It will just be valuable feedback for you to consider when trying to decide between two or more different names for a character. Ultimately, youre the parent and your child can be named anything you choose.A final thought on naming charactersNaming the characters of your story is one of the most exciting steps youll take as an author in the writing process. Although it might be tempting to determine a characters name immediately in the pre-planning stages of writing your novel, try to resist the urge and give yourself time to learn more about the character as you write. Rather than randomly choosing a name that you think fits, spend time researching meanings, anagrams, alliterations and name generators before making a final decision. Theres so much in a name!

In theory, the resulting deficits would be paid for by an expanded economy during the boom that would follow; this was the reasoning behind the New Deal. Governments can use a budget surplus to do two things: to slow the pace of strong economic growth and to stabilize prices when inflation is too high. Keynesian theory posits that removing spending from the economy will reduce levels of aggregate demand and contract the economy, thus stabilizing prices. Economists debate the effectiveness of fiscal stimulus. The argument mostly centers on crowding out, a phenomena where government borrowing leads to higher interest rates that offset the simulative impact of spending. When the government runs a budget deficit, funds will need to come from public borrowing (the issue of government bonds), overseas borrowing, or monetizing the debt. When governments fund a deficit with the issuing of government bonds, interest rates can increase across the market, because government borrowing creates higher demand for credit in the financial markets. This causes a lower aggregate demand for goods and services, contrary to the objective of a fiscal stimulus. Neoclassical economists generally emphasize crowding out while Keynesians argue that fiscalShow MoreRelatedFiscal Policy And Fiscal Policies1046 Words   |  5 PagesFiscal Policy Generally fiscal policy is the set of strategies that government implements or plans to use with certain activities such as the collection of revenues and taxes and expenditure that can influence the overall economic condition of the nation. Additionally, Lowe points out that road transportation’s emission of green house gasses, â€Å"increased by 76% between 1971 and 1989† (Lowe, 2005, p. 112). Furthermore, road transportation is the largest polluter in the industry. It utilizes â€Å"over 80% of the total energy used in the transport sector and contributes over 75% of its total CO2 output (Lowe, 2005, p. 113). Finally, freight transportation by heavy vehicles causes pavement damage at significantly higher rates than passenger traffic (SSTI, 2011). Road transportation providers have adopted several innovations that have lowered the environmental impact of this transportation mode. The adoption of clean diesel technology by the industry has resulted in significant reductions in fuel use and emissions by trucks. Motivation and Performance Theories in Relation to New Zealand Post Free Essays

A simple game of bingo, if analysed closely, can be shown to be a tedious task consisting of a repetitive action that occurs after being prompted by a repetitive stimulus. The skill level needed to make that action is low, and the variability in the rules of the game rarely changes. This game is not unlike many of the jobs that can be classified as having low motivational performance. We will write a custom essay sample on Motivation and Performance Theories in Relation to New Zealand Post or any similar topic only for you Order Now So why do people not only enjoy playing games like bingo, but actually pay money to have the pleasure? The answer directly points to the motivating factors of monetary rewards, which is the stimulus for the individual†s performance. In this essay I will discuss the theory behind â€Å"Motivation† and â€Å"Performance† in relation to New Zealand Post and the theoretical ideals that their management should adopt with employees. There are many theories regarding motivation with the most prevalent being the theories of Abraham Maslow and Frederick Herzberg. It is important to understand these theories and their implications to accurately comment on reinforcement theories of motivation. According to Maslow†s hierarchy of needs, there are five classes: (1) physiological, (2) safety, (3) social, (4) esteem, and (5) self-actualisation. (Karen. P. Harlos Lecture Notes) each lower level need must be satisfied before an individual experiences higher level needs. Also, as Hall, Batley, Elkin, Geare, Johnston, Jones, Selsky and Sibbald (1999) found that Maslow hypothesized that as physiological, safety, social, and esteem needs were satisfied, they ceased to motivate, while the self-actualisation needs actually motivate an individual more as they are satisfied (Hall et al. 999). Herzberg used this theory as a base to build his motivation-hygiene theory, which ties Maslow†s needs to on the job achievement. The hygiene elements relate to low needs (physiological, safety, and social)(Harlos 2000). For an individual, hygiene conditions include company policy and administration, supervision, relationships with peers and supervisors, work conditions, salary, status, and security. These, according to Herzberg account for 69% of the factors that cause employee dissatisfaction or lack of motivation. The motivation conditions, which include achievement, the job itself, recognition, responsibilities, and personal growth, accounted for 81% of the factors that contributed to job satisfaction. The hygiene conditions are extrinsic factors (behaviour that is performed for material or social rewards as defined by Harlos 2000) while the motivation conditions are intrinsic factors (behaviour that is performed for its own sake not for material or social rewards as defined by Harlos 2000), and the only way to sustain motivation toward organizational goals is through the achievement of intrinsic outcomes. Each of these theories has proven to contain ideas consistent with human nature, but each also has its limitations within organizational settings. Because lower order needs are generally satisfied in the workplace today, managers have to deal with how to provide esteem and self-actualisation to their employees, and that can be a vague concept to a manager who demands results immediately. Also, studies demonstrate that different workers are motivated by different factors be them intrinsic or extrinsic. In relation to New Zealand Post the above theories can be applied to achieve an excellent level of motivation within the organization, however there are potential disadvantages also, where the employees may get over-motivated or become too empowered and thus create divisions within the organization. In terms of Maslow†s theory, the five levels of needs could be ensured by mangers of NZ Post and overall by the corporate planners of NZ Post by the following; in terms of physiological needs, money is the driving factor here as it provides the a means of achieve food, shelter, warmth and sleep, thus that management role is very limited, as it is controlled to a degree by relevant laws of the country. However those above the management who set wages must be careful not to set wages too low, otherwise workers will become grossly dissatisfied and look elsewhere to achieve their basic needs (Hall et al. 999). At the safety level NZ Post can provide their employees with agreeable contracts and work benefits such as health care. A work environment that is considered safe as well as adequate ongoing training is another aspect, also assurances of long-term employment (Hall et al. 1999). Social level issues can be resolved by NZ Post by organising teams maybe by regions and encouraging group satisfaction, or perhaps even making sure contact is established by way of team sports days, or annual picnic†s etc, any activity that ensures worker contact (Hall et al. 999). The next level is perhaps the most crucial in terms of how much NZ Post management is concerned, management may be able to fill esteem needs of the employee by showing recognition of a job well done, which may lead to a internal structure whereby levels of achievement are reached, and as the employee reaches these levels they may gain more responsibility within the organisation (Hall et al. 1999). Self actualisation needs in terms of what management can do for employees to reach this stage, entirely depend on the individual, and the previous stage, as itself esteem is realised then self actualisation becomes of more importance, and so the employee is self-motivated and the role of the NZ Management is merely one of maintenance (Hall et al. 1999). The above are all very good in theory, but in practice the implications of some of these theories for an individual and for the organisation can be crucial. NZ Post Management couldn†t be blamed if they felt the offering of money to an employee over and above what the individual needs to satisfy there needs would result in that individual working harder, however what is more likely to happen is the individual isn†t motivated anymore by that factor, and is instead motivated by esteem needs, as cited in Hall et al. 2000) â€Å"A satisfied need is not a motivator† The application of the Herzberg two-factor model is in practice much more involved that I first thought, there seems to be a large amount of criticism about Herzberg, which I will attempt to briefly outline, and thus if NZ Post was to adapt this theory it may not provide the right answer to any problems they may be facing. Firstly there has been research done into the methodology of Herzberg’s research, it seems that by asking the questions in the way that they did it was only natural that individuals would attribute the good things about the job to themselves and the bad things to the organisation (as suggested by Vroom 1964 cited in Thomson 1989). So the good things simply became meting challenges, getting promoted and assuming responsibility, whereas bad things were in affect always the fault of the organisation. Thus it was reasonable for individuals to attribute their lack of performance as being a result of poor organisational structure or communication, or poor wages or bad working conditions, therefore Herzberg†s findings were more a result of the way the questions were asked and not altogether an indication of what motivated individuals at work. The second criticism that arises is whether or not it is possible to clearly â€Å"distinguish between motivator and hygiene variables in the way that two factor theory does. † (Thomson 1989 pg 164). At times factors like the gender of the worker and the structure of the organisation tends to influence whether or not a job characteristics acts as a motivator or a hygiene, thus the distinction is not as clear cut as Herzberg†s theory would suggest. Finally the two-factor theory just doesn†t take into consideration the differences between individuals, its just known that individuals do not always react in a similar fashion, for the same work characteristics which will motivate one individual may not necessary motivate another. I suggest for NZ Post to be able to maintain the calibre of people they strive for, and to provide tools to develop and grow, the best way to create the desired environment and create the best management would be to adopt Maslow†s theories, as it allows for more of an individual touch to individual situations. McGregor developed an additional theory on human behaviour, motivation, and especially performance in the late 1950†³s. His theories X and Y and were based on assumptions made regarding the â€Å"system† and individuals. In short, in Theory X (the most common management practice) management organizes all elements of production, motivates and controls employee behaviour to fit the needs of the organization, and without this intervention, employees would be indifferent to changing organizational needs. McGregor further assumes that managers believe that the average employee is by nature are lazy, dislike work, want security and dislike responsibility (as cited by Harlos 2000). McGregor†s alternative to Theory X was Theory Y. This theory made the assumptions that management has the responsibility for organizing the elements of production, people are not by nature passive, but become so as a result of experiences, management should enable employees to develop their motivational characteristics, and that it is essential for management to arrange organizational conditions in a manner where employees can achieve their own goals by directing their personal effort towards organizational objectives. The contrast between X and Y solely relates to who controls human behaviour. Theory X touts external control, and Theory Y promotes a self-fulfilling prophecy and that Theory Y management will breed Theory Y employees and vice-versa. In the application of McGregor†s theories an obvious pitfall is that obviously given the choice management will opt for Theory Y, however the application can result in a very different outcome. Theory Y places an unrealistic amount of burden on the management, and thus they have to sometimes resort to Theory X as no matter how much nurturing or inspiration managers give to employees, there will always be some who just have no desire to work, and show little or no initiative. So NZ Post may run many seminars to attempt to increase performance, or empower those who management feel need a performance boost, yet inevitably those who have no desire to perform better will just not respond to any of these performance motivators and hence management will have to resort to Theory X management to get these employees to work as they should be. Another problem may be with those employees who have been part of the organisation for a number of years, and a new fresh inspirational manager comes along who has been to all the courses and seminars and has used all the theories, and yet these employees are so used to old school Theory X management, they will just simply not be able to conform to this new Theory Y management style, as suggested in Hall et al. (1999) In conclusion I have outlines both Maslow†s and Herzberg†s theories in relation to motivation and McGregor†s theories in relation to performance. I also have suggested ways in which NZ Post could apply these theories to enable them to better fulfil their corporate profile statement. I suggested that perhaps Herzberg†s theory would not be best suited to NZ Post due to the many flaws in the application of his theory and that Maslow†s theory in practice would enable a better fufilment of the corperate profile statement. The Character of Lady Macbeth Research Paper Example

The Character of Lady Macbeth Paper The character of Lady Macbeth is riddled with complications. Discerning her morality is a question that has no definite answer. Essentially her role in the play is as Macbeths wife and regardless of her motives for doing so she is the driving force in the murder of King Duncan. I am going to study the character of Lady Macbeth to determine different ways in which the character could be portrayed. There are two reasons why there is so much uncertainty about her character. The first is being the way the plot unfolds. The first time Lady Macbeth is introduced is in act 1 scene 5 and it is significant that her first sentence is Glamis thou art, and Cawder; and shalt be what thou art promised i. e. King of Scotland, significant because immediately it makes her sound obsessive. After this we see her character conjure evil spirits, this point will be discussed later in detail because it is an important factor in completing the task, but we begin to think that there is only one side to her character. As the play goes on we learn more about Lady Macbeth, which makes us question our pre-conceptions and consequently review previous scenes in this new light. Different emphasis, pauses, hand movements and changes in the speed of delivery can quite easily alter the way the audience will perceive a particular scene, providing that the text will support this. A very good and simple example for this is: When considering whose idea it is to kill the King, to make it seem like it is Lady Macbeths evil plan we would put emphasis on all uses of first-person pronouns in her lines e. . my fell purpose and Leave all the rest to me. After studying the text I believe that there are three definitive interpretation of Lady Macbeths character. The first version is that of an evil woman who can only achieve her aims through her husband and therefore uses him as a means to get what she wants. Another version of her character is as a supportive wife and therefore partially the victim during the course of Macbe ths quest for the throne, who consciously does everything to please her husband. Finally, she could be portrayed as a loving wife whose impulsive mistakes and hunger for power causes her to lose control, she perhaps feels the killing will stop with that of Duncan. As mentioned she is maybe using Macbeth. This is significant to the middle ages because women did not have any status and were considered the property of their husbands. Ambitious women like Lady Macbeth could only gain consequence through their husbands. If Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth that he wanted to be king then she would have gained from his actions. The play is full of examples that display Lady Macbeth spurring Macbeth to kill Duncan even when he seems to be against the idea. Most noticeably in act 1 scene 7, Macbeth says, We will proceed no further in this business. Her response to this is: Such I account thy love, suggesting he cannot love her if this is his ultimatum. She also implies he is a coward, Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valour as thou art in desire? After seeing his reaction, I dare do all that may become a man she feels she is motivating him and follows his reply with When you durst do it, then you were a man. She is exasperating his male pride and honour, and ends up manipulating him to do the deed. At one point Lady Macbeth mentions that Macbeth had sworn to carry out the deed when neither time nor place did then adhere. So the killing of Duncan may have been an idea that they shared amongst themselves in the past. This is a good example of newfound knowledge going in favour of Lady Macbeth. Now considering that Lady Macbeth has always been aware of Macbeths vaulting ambition and his plans to kill the King; we can now understand why she immediately concludes that Duncan must be murdered upon reading Macbeths letter. Alternatively, when she says he has sworn, she could be referring to the conversation that they had at the end of act 1 scene 5 in which case she is trying to trick him in to thinking that he had sworn to do it when in fact he said, we will speak further. This is very sly and contributes as evidence towards the argument that she pushed him to kill the king against his better judgement. When a messenger tells Lady Macbeth that the King is to make a visit that night; she makes several interesting comments. Firstly she says, He brings great news. This is a rather awkward line to analyse because it seems to be said in pure delight (with the murder in mind), it is a key line in interpreting her as an opportunistic character. An actress portraying Lady Macbeth as benevolent would very much try to mellow down this statement, by saying it slowly, thoughtfully and with almost a sarcastic undertone in her voice, making it seem as though she is dreading it. In fact this style or similar should be used to mellow down any statement such as That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlements. She could say it in an almost sympathetic voice, sorry for him but moreover herself. A smile whilst saying this would be effective in portraying cruelty. Now we arrive at the place in the play where Lady Macbeth conjures evil spirits, this scene adds to our uncertainty about her, but different points can be picked out to serve different purposes/portrayals. Come you spirits 40 That tend on mortal thoughts! Unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty; make thick my blood, Stop up the access and passage to remorse, Taking in to account that there are three different interpretations of Lady Macbeth this extract lends itself to all three. The Shakespearean audience would not have looked favourably on witchcraft, which is what Lady Macbeth is doing. From an evil point of view if she were to experience any remorse, it would not be from killing the King, but instead from using her husband, because there is no evidence that suggests she doesnt love him to some degree. However, as a director you may feel that Lady Macbeth is filling her mind with direst cruelty because she is not in fact evil (logically she would only need evil if she was of good nature) and so she needs to invite darkness in to her soul before she can instigate the killing. In contrast, if the actress were to make herself seem vulnerable and if on line thirty-nine (also forty-seven and forty-nine) she put emphasis on the pronoun you (when referring to the evil spirits) she would make herself seem like a victim and successfully create the impression that she is not what they are. There is a scene after the murders where Lady Macbeth faints. It has been argued over, as long as the play itself, whether she fainted to distract attention from her struggling husband or whether strangely she realises the implications of her actions. The line is Help me hence, ho! and then she faints. If one wanted to make out that she did so to distract attention from her husband who was being interrogated then the line would be said in a theatrical and pretentious manner, with perhaps her glancing at him and then fainting. Alternatively to follow the other scenario, she would have to make the fainting more realistic and this could be done by slowly building up to it. At first the supportive wifes part in the play is to spur Macbeth to do the deed, but now we are at the stage in the play where Macbeth has just killed the king and now Lady Macbeth changes her role. She now supports Macbeth and calms him; Consider it not so deeply. When he becomes numb she takes control of the situation, Give me the daggers. She could be doing this because then she will not feel as guilty about using him. Other sections of the script, in this particular scene, such as her cruel pun, For it must seem their guilt and her general calmness in the situation is quite perplexing considering Macbeths numbness. These are points to highlight when making her seem wicked, due to her indifference, highlighted by Macbeths guilt. A point of discussion is why doesnt Lady Macbeth kill Duncan herself? There are several possibilities, of which one is clearly supported by the text. Lady Macbeth said, Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had donet. Yet it is another view that this is just an excuse and she is using Macbeth to achieve something she cannot do herself, however evil she may be. In this situation I think the first possibility is the most realistic one because Lady Macbeth says the line to the audience and not to Macbeth in the form of reasoning. I think that from her determination and her inability to see the wrong in her actions I think that maybe she could have killed the King herself. Banquo is another character that is murdered in the play; this is done because Macbeth does not want Banquos prophecy to come true for him. We can only speculate whether Lady Macbeth knew about the murder of Banquo. What we do know is that she was aware that Macbeth planned to kill him, he says to her Thou knowst that Banquo and his Fleance lives. In what can be interpreted in a rather sly manner; Lady Macbeth replies with But in them natures copys not eterne. But this time Lady Macbeth doesnt tell Macbeth to leave the matter in her hands but instead it is Macbeth who ends the scene with Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck. This change is significant because it is as if Macbeth now no longer needs Lady Macbeth to spur him anymore. In the end it appears that Lady Macbeth just disappears from the play, a method Shakespeare used in Ki ng Lear. As the audience we have to try and understand why Shakespeare does this. If we see Lady Macbeth as just a functional character whose role is to motivate Macbeth to fulfil his ambitions; then we can conclude she is pulled out of the play after she serves this purpose, but only after we see the effects her actions have had on her. Lady Macbeths last scene is when she goes insane, and it is in her insanity that to some extent she realises what she has done, and the great consequences that they had, who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him? Quite different from her thoughts at the end of act two scene two, A little water clears us of the deed. She also ponders the fate of others, The Thane of Fife had a wife: where is she now? This is a murder, like that of Banquo, with which she had no direct link with, but she started Macbeth off and must face much of the blame. It is important to mention that the portrayal of Lady Macbeth is very much dependent on how Macbeths role is acted, because what is important is that a balance is struck and that they both complement each other. From the aspect of the play the final scene may have the answer to the question of Lady Macbeths morality. Malcolm having defeated the crazed Macbeth is the saviour or hero of the play and therefore his opinion is to be taken seriously. He declares an end to Macbeths tyrannical rule over Scotland, condemning him and also his fiendish wife. This label for her, coming from Malcolm, is not to be considered gospel but of significant credibility. So far the factors I have taken in to consideration are the most significant scenes in the play for Lady Macbeth, from the evidence I have chosen to play Lady Macbeth as being evil. Now with this decision I will discuss the casting and costumes. The actress who will play Lady Macbeth should be able to look evil yet have a benevolent appeal. An actress who is tall and slim would be the most appropriate, because it will show feminine power, it would be best if she were also beautiful so we could believe that this women could successfully manipulate a man. Facial features would best include visible cheekbones, which gives the notion of power. At first her face should not look plain; make-up should be used to bring colour to her lips and cheeks (building on her sexual power), but also to make her eyes dark so she appears mysterious. Though sometimes overused in the portrayal of evil the costumes should revolve around black and red. Black and red being synonymous with evil, darkness etc. i. e. the characteristics we want to bring out. I would use the costume to emphasise a change in Lady Macbeth from before she conjures the evil spirits to after. Prior to doing so she should wear all black, but then she should incorporate red, the audience will be able to identify with the colours. In between I do not believe that the colours will play a lot of significance. However, for the last scene where she goes mad I would dress her in white, not because she is innocent but because she is vulnerable and the audience will notice the change in her costume as a complement to that in her attributes. Removing the colour from her face would also help emphasise this.

Mohatma Ghandi essays

Mohatma Ghandi essays HYPOHESIS- That Ghandis strengths were in being able to combat the unfairness of British rule and in temporarily unifuing a nation of very different people in opposition to the British in order to win independance for India and Pakistan. The country of India was the largest most prestigious possession within the British Empire. Up until World War one the British had never considered giving independence to India. There was a dramatic superior-inferior relationship between the British and the Indians. There was no strong sense of unity in India at this time. One man had the strength to combat the unfairness of British rule and temporarily unify this broken nation to achieve independence for the country. Mohandas Ghandi was a qualified solicitor, studied in London and had been practicing in South Africa where he represented Indian minority settlers. At forty six years of age Ghandi returned to India after WW1. Disgusted at the Rowlatt acts and the Armritsar Affair, Ghandi became determined to free India of both British rule and European influence. The Indian nationalist movement was strong within educated Indians but lacked support of the masses The illiterate Indian peasants were conditioned by centuries of hardship to endure misery and act in obedience to their overlords whoever they might be.(Cowie. p.40) It was almost impossible to influence, persuade or inspire them. Ghandi was the man who would do this. Affectionately given the name Mahatma (great soul), Ghandi condemned all things Western. He claimed true Indian nationalism involved a return to a simplistic peasant society of self supporting workers. To prove his belief to the country and show he was a man of the people he dressed like them, shared their poverty and their simplicity. By this he achieved a great emotional awakening among the masses. The effectiveness of Ghandis leadership by example was due to his ability to d...

RUINED Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

RUINED - Essay Example The play is an amalgamation of both harrowing and shocking experiences brought together by Kate Whoriskey’s ensemble, sets by Derek McLane and scintillating music by Dominic Kanza. In her 2007 play Nottage paints shocking and evocative portraits of the lives of African Americans while portraying the horrific sufferings and brutalization suffered by them during the decade long civil conflict that took place in the Congo. The clear message of Nottage was to bring about an awareness among the people about the atrocities meted out to the minorities of African Americans and to put an end to such practices in the future. Through the darkest moments of ‘Ruined’ there emerges and shines out awe inspiring nobility and profound tenderness that melts the heart. ‘Ruined is the kind of play that serves as a homage to all those resilient women who have to pull themselves together and lead a new life after they have been ‘ruined’. The primary aim of the playwr ight was to bring a problem that seemed too far away, right into the midst of contemporary society. According to what Nottage states -   "But I wanted to create an emotional bridge, so that when people are reading those articles, they feel that they're connecting with living, breathing human beings, not just statistics." (Lynn Nottage, 2007) The central theme of the plot revolves around the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo, and traces a young woman’s nightmarish journey to a business savvy woman running a brothel called Mama Nadi during the thick of the Civil War. The director, Seret Scott, was quite capable in unifying the whole act together as a lot of trouble was taken for the costumes, lighting and the setting of each scene. For example, most of the scenes were set in a bar or brothel that was located in a mining area in the Congo rain forest. The regular clients were rustic rebels, miners and government officials who were in charge on that particular area o n any given day. These people were rough and with no sympathy. According to Nottage, â€Å"Rape has become a weapon of war† and these women were raped and mutilated in the most callous manner. The characters in the play each played their part very well and I am sure that their performances would have helped many people identify with them. Though I disliked the character of Mama Nadi, yet I liked the way she performed as the mistress of the brothel house. The reason why I disliked her character was because even though she was a woman herself, she had no sympathy for the other women who were so brutally treated. She goes by rules that are to be followed and everything is business for her. One of the characters that I like in the play is that of Christian played by Oberon K.A. Adjepond, who supplies Mama Nadi with whatever she needs for the house. Christian is a decent character who loves poetry and spontaneously recites a few lines of poetry throughout the play. The reason why I like this character is because he is quite reliable and trustworthy, especially when considering the type of people he is surrounded with. He tries to lend support to the ladies when the bad guys come and argues with them, but it is rather surprising that he somehow gets away with what he says. Sophie is another character that I like in the play. I feel sorry for the way she was brutally raped. Even Mama Nadi who is considered to have a cold heart, is seen to show some understanding and tenderness towards Sophie and this understanding can be

Health Organization Case Study - Essay Example In the year 2011, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated showed total net earnings of $5.142 billion. UnitedHealth Group is the holding company of the UnitedHealthcare, and is the largest and chief health carrier all over the United States of America. The company was formed in the year 1977 and was initially called the United HealthCare Corporation. Contracted Fee Schedule Match Rate basically is an indicator of how often the insurer's claim payment tallies the fee schedule put down in the initial contract. Seven Essay -- Film Movie Movies

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For this report I choose the movie Seven. This movie was released back in 1995 and stars Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gweneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, John McGinley, and Kevin Spacy. Seven was directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew K. Walker.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The movie begins with the usual old cop, who is about to retire, and teams up with a young, ready to take on the world cop. The first act begins promisingly, with two cops being assigned to their first case together. One is white and the other is black and they have vastly different investigative styles. Each murder, being investigated by Lieutenant William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt), is based on one of the Seven Deadly Sins, which are Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Wrath, Pride and Lust. The detectives find an enormously fat man who is forced to eat himself to death-Gluttony. The detectives discover a high profile lawyer who is made to cut off a pound of flesh for Greed. They find hooker who has been killed by having sex with a man that we will just say?s wearing an apparatus on his body for Lust. A runway model is forced to choose death or disfigurement for Pride. Sloth was a man that had been tortured for a whole year. He had been barely kept alive and his hand had been cut off for his fingerprints. He is the only victim that does not die but is a complete vegetable in such a fragile state that he would be better off dead. For envy and wrath we will come back to in a bit. The kil...

Michael Huemer: “America’s Unjust Drug War” Essay

In the essay â€Å"America’s Unjust Drug War† by Michael Huemer, Huemer discusses the facts and opinions around the subject on whether or not the recreational use of drugs should be banned by law. Huemer believes that the American government should not prohibit the use of drugs. He brings up the point on drugs and how they harm the users and the people in the user’s life; he proves that the prohibition on drugs in unjust. Huemer believes that drug prohibition is an injustice to Americans’ natural rights and questions why people can persucute those who do drugs. The most prominent argument against the use of drugs is the harm it has on the users. Although drug use is potentially very harmful to the users the government should not be allowed to prohibit people from harming themselves. Many things people regularly take part in are equally as harmful as drug use such as â€Å"smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, eating too much, riding motorcycles, having unprotected or promiscuous sex†¦(Huemer, Para. 5).† There is no way that the government can prohibit all those acts for it is not any of their business. One might argue that drug use is more harmful then those acts, they would be wrong in most cases because all of those acts lead to death which is as harmful as you can get. The Office of National Drug Control Policy claims that drugs kill eighteen thousand Americans a year while tobacco kills four hundred and forty thousand Americans per year. Another relevant statistic is obesity causes up to four hundred and twenty thousand deaths per year. Neither tobacco smokers nor obese people have been punished yet many drug users are imprisoned. Another point prohibitionists suggest against the use of drugs is that drugs harm one’s quality of life however many other things harm one’s quality of life such as dropping out of high school or working at the same job your entire life; all of these are choices people make and the only choice that is persecuted is doing drugs, the others are considered ridiculous to persecute. The money that drug users use on money is equivalent to those who gamble or spend it on frivolous things leaving both lives at smaller quality, yet the drug users are persecuted. Although the use of drugs has the same affects on other people’s life choices drug users are persecuted and people who make equally life-threatening choices are left to make those choices with no persecutions. Another argument against the use of drugs is the harm it potentially has against the people around the users. People around drug users do have the potential to be harmed from them yet so do many other things; driving could potentially hurt people and many other things, yet anyone who has a license can drive a vehicle without being persecuted. Every choice in life has risks of hurting people yet the only one choice is persecuted; drugs. Although it seems absurd to punish people for being inconsiderate or making not so good choices the outcome of their choices on the public are similar to drug users. If drugs are truly unjust then America has over four hundred and fifty thousand people in jail unjustly. They are not just being punished for no reason they are being punished for exercising their right as a human, making their own choices. Everyone has the right to choose to do drugs or not to do them. If there was a drug that took away the users freedom to make choices or to attack and hurt other people then the government could step in and help, however no drug exists that have that effects on people. The belief supporting that it is a human right to choose to do drugs comes from the idea that everyone owns their own body. So a person can make any choice as what they can do to their body, harmful or not. An example of this can be seen in the woman’s right to have or not have an abortion. Some people believe it is the woman’s choice because it is her body but others believe she should not be allowed to because it hurts the fetus, which is potentially a live human. Most people support the belief that people have the right to choose what the do to their body however with this right you may not use their body to harm others. Prohibitionists argue that drug use is not ones right over their body because the drugs are making the choices and not the person freely, maybe it is not their fault they have abused drugs it could have been psychological compulsion or something similar. It is still unjust to persecute these people because they are not morally responsible for that choice. However if users do freely decide to use drugs then they are exercising their rights and the government has no right to interfere. Overall Huemer looks at all the prohibitionists arguments that could be thought of and disproves their belief on the laws against drug use. Huemer believes it is a human right to choose to do drugs just as it is to eat whatever food you choose even if it makes you obese, or smoke as many cigarettes a day even though you will probably die, and the choice to have an abortion. With life you have many choices you can make and with that choice comes the chance of hurting yourself either physically or mentally as well as people that surround you. In conclusion Huemer fully disagrees with the prohibits on the use of drugs in America with his belief that the persecutions are fully unjust as well as inhumane with many people in jail because they chose to use drugs.
